James P. Hanna entered the United States Army on October 17,1939, from Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. He intially served with the U.S. Army's 3rd Division, 10th Field Artillery Battalion. James then served with the 603d Tank Destroyer Battalion. In late 1943 he volunteered for the paratroops, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. Headquarters and Service Battery. He rose to the rank of Corporal in 1944. James' Army serial number was 06935092.
